Description

Part-time

The University of Miami is currently seeking a Medical Assistant to work at Sylvester Cancer Center in Miami. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of the day to day clinic/office activities within the areas of responsibility. This position will perform duties under the direction of the RN’s, with minimal supervision. He/she will work alongside provider and nurses to complete specialty medication appeals, follow up with insurance and communicate with patient for outcomes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Technical Duties: Proficient in math applications and use of spreadsheet programs; ability to operate word processing equipment; advanced written communication skills including grammar, spelling, and punctuation; thorough understanding of all regulations regarding personnel practices.

2. Motor Skills: Ability to input data to computer.

3. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with others in a professional, courteous, tactful manner; ability to act as a consultant to management.

4. Mental Abilities: Organize and prioritize; analyze situations and develop alternatives; analyze data and develop valid conclusions, develop clear, concise policies, procedures and correspondence; provide clear direction to others; manage duties in an environment of changing priorities and frequent deadlines.

5. Sensory Requirements: Ability to communicate with others via telephone; ability to read written documents.

IV. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: May require prolonged sitting or standing, some bending, stretching. Requires eye hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate results. Requires lifting papers or boxes up to 25lbs occasionally. May be required to push/pull up to 250lbs in a wheelchair. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people. Staff must remain flexible and available to provide staffing assistance for any/all disaster or emergency situations.

V. WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Physical Environment: All work is performed in an air-conditioned office/clinic environment.
2. Occupational Safety and/or Health Risks: The normal routine may involve blood and/or bodily fluids. Appropriate personal protective equipment including disposable gloves, gowns, masks, face shield, and aprons are available in the department. Ambu bags are readily available. Appropriate receptacles are available for disposal of sharp objects and other biohazardous waste.

VI. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
• Provides patient care under the direction of physicians, residents, and nurses in accordance with the hospital standards.
• Assists all medical providers with minor procedures, as needed.
• Performs veni-puncture for laboratory testing when necessary on patients.
• Coordinates patient flow in and out of clinic from waiting area to examination room with the goal and emphasis on minimizing waiting time for patients.
• Greets all patients in a positive, professional, and friendly manner.
• Assists medical providers in obtaining pertinent medical information from the patient and is readily available to the physician throughout the examination to facilitate management of patient care.
• Prepares patient for examination with medical provider (i.e., gown).
• Performs vital signs effectively (weight, height, pulse, blood pressure, temperature).
• Practices universal precautions per policy
• Takes inventory of medical supplies and submits list of necessary items that need to be ordered to the supervisor.
• Checks expiration dates and discards expired supplies.
• Responsible for maintaining an appropriate par level of supplies.
• Knowledge of the various systems: Uchart
• Knowledge of appropriate specimen collection, handling and storing of specimen, and equipment needed.
• Calls for pick-up/delivers and transportation of lab specimens to appropriate lab facility (UMH, UMHC, Quest, LabCorp), including time frame for STAT specimens.
• Responsible for maintaining examination rooms fully stocked and in an organized manner. Ensures examination rooms are clean after a patient has been seen as well as at the end of the day.
• Wipes down blood pressure cuffs after every patient.
• Responsible for capturing all clinic supplies utilized to include physical labor costs in accordance with the charge master codes.
• Documents any treatment, assessment or medical information in the patient medical record.
• Obtain authorizations for all testing required for patients such as Ultrasounds, Chest X-Rays, Diagnostic procedures, diagnostic tests, etc.
• Inspects Glucometer, blanket warmer, and eye wash station in clinic daily and documents accordingly into log.
• Checks temperature of refrigerator in and documents accordingly into log.
• Obtains Prometheus results prior to clinic visits and when needed. Scans Prometheus results and orders, into UCHART and forwards to the coordinator, on day received.
• Handles all emergencies adhering to hospital policy in a timely and competent manner always putting patient’s safety and well-being first.
• Answers telephone in a professional and diligent manner, returns calls and follows up accordingly.
• Flexible work schedules will apply and will be based on clinic volumes.
• Reports broken equipment and enters work orders for repair.
• Reports departures from clinic to the supervisor
• Performs blood glucose per policy, if applicable.
• Assists RN Coordinators with medication refills.
• Assists with scheduling patient appointments
• Documents accordingly into shared drive spreadsheet.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant educational program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).

Note: (If MA presently has, an active MA certification, school verification and exceptions may apply.)

CMA- Certified Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)®

RMA- Registered Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists (AMT)

CCMA- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant- National Healthcare Association (NHA)

NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant (NHA - NCCT)

NRCMA - Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP)

MA - Medical Assistant without an approved certification must:

provide proof of completion, from an approved educational program

sign an Agreement Statement, stating candidate shall obtain a National wide or Statewide MA certification no more than 12 months from the date of hire.

Additional certification:

American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers

HIV & AIDS Certification: Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continue Education (CE) Certification Florida: HIV/AIDS Training for Healthcare Professionals
